Yes, you can keep your WhatsApp number.

Your clients keep messaging the number they already have. Luna answers on it, you still see everything on your phone, and nothing gets deleted.

Key facts

  • Needs the WhatsApp Business app on version 2.24.17 or higher. The number and account stay in your own Meta business account.
  • Your old chats stay on your phone and are never shared with Purple Luna. Luna only sees messages from the moment you connect.
  • Group chats never reach Luna. Broadcast lists go read-only. Disappearing messages, view once and live location switch off.
  • Open the WhatsApp Business app at least every 14 days or Meta drops the link.
  • Undo it any time on your phone: Settings, Account, Business Platform, Disconnect Account.

Do my clients have to save a new number?

No. They message the number they already have, in the chat they already have with you. Luna answers inside that same thread, so a client who booked with you last spring sees the new replies under the old ones. Nothing about the chat looks different to her.

Here is what makes that possible. Meta now lets one WhatsApp Business app number be used by the app and by software at the same time. Meta's developer documentation refers to it as coexistence. You connect through Meta's own flow on our site, not through anything we built ourselves. Two screens are needed: the phone with WhatsApp Business on it, and a laptop or tablet for the connection page. On the phone you tap Connect, confirm, and paste a short code. That is the whole job.

Meta then converts your existing WhatsApp Business account into one that software can also use. The number and the account stay in your own Meta business account, not ours. If you want the background on the app, the API and the Cloud API, we wrote a plain English guide to the three.

What happens to my chat history?

It stays on your phone. Nothing is deleted and nothing is moved. Luna only sees messages that arrive from the moment you connect.

Meta's connection screen offers to share your old chats with the software you are connecting. We do not take them. Your older chats are your clients' private conversations, and for a clinic many of them hold health details, so Purple Luna never receives them. Say no on that screen and carry on.

Luna starts fresh. When a regular messages after you connect, Luna works from that conversation on, and everything before it is still on your phone, exactly as it was.

What stops working in the app once it is connected?

Most things carry on. Your one-to-one chats, contacts, business profile, labels, quick replies, greeting and away messages, catalogue and calls all work as before. Luna reads and sends one-to-one messages. Everything else in the app stays yours.

A few things do change, and we would rather you heard them from us now than found out later.

Broadcast lists. You cannot create new ones. Existing lists become read-only, and Luna never sees them.

Disappearing messages, view once and live location. All three switch off for one-to-one chats.

Group chats. They carry on in the app, but Luna never sees them. She only works in one-to-one chats.

Linked devices. WhatsApp Web and your other linked devices unlink when you connect. You link them again afterwards. WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS are not supported while connected.

The 14 day rule. If the phone running WhatsApp Business sits unused for about 14 days, Meta drops the link. Open the app at least every two weeks and you are fine.

One platform at a time. A number can be connected to one business platform. If you ever move to another tool, you disconnect from us first.

Meta's charges. Messages you send from the app stay free. Messages Luna sends go through Meta's API, and Meta bills those to your own Meta account, not through us.

What if the clinic runs on my personal WhatsApp?

A lot of owner-run clinics and salons do. The client list lives in the same app as the family group. Luna cannot connect to personal WhatsApp, so there is one step first: move the number to the free WhatsApp Business app.

WhatsApp supports this on the same number. Back up first. Install WhatsApp Business, let it find your number, and allow it to bring your chat history and media across. Your clients keep the same number and the same chat. The only visible change is that WhatsApp marks you as a business account. One snag: if you use WhatsApp's own contacts feature rather than your phone's address book, save those contacts to your phone first, or they are lost in the move. You can move back to WhatsApp Messenger later if you ever want to, though Business app features like the catalogue do not come with you.

Once you are in the Business app, you connect the same way as everyone else.

Would you rather keep your personal number out of it altogether? Then we set up a new number for the business, and help you put it on your website, Instagram and Google profile. Meta's message charges are included on that number.

Who answers when we both can?

Luna answers first, day and night. You still see every message and every reply on your phone, because WhatsApp keeps the app and Luna in sync.

If you reply in a chat yourself, Luna steps back in that chat. You are never both talking over each other to the same client. Your reply also reaches Luna, so she knows what you have said if the client comes back later. In every other chat she carries on as normal.

That is the same handover rule we described in what an AI receptionist actually does: she handles the routine, and the moment a human steps in, she steps out.

Can I undo it?

Yes, from your own phone, without asking us. In the WhatsApp Business app go to Settings, then Account, then Business Platform, and tap Disconnect Account.

Your number goes back to being an ordinary WhatsApp Business app number. Your chats stay on your phone. The number and the account were in your own Meta business account the whole time, so there is nothing to hand back and nothing to port. If you connect again later, Meta treats it as a fresh connection.

What do I need before I connect?

Three things. The WhatsApp Business app on version 2.24.17 or higher, so update it from the app store first. The phone it runs on, plus a laptop or tablet for the connection page. And the login for your Meta business account, because Meta's flow signs you in with it.

Want to see Luna before any of that? Try her on the clinics page as if you were a client and see how she handles you.

We checked every Meta fact in this post against Meta's developer documentation and WhatsApp's Help Centre on 23 October 2026. Both are linked below.

Questions

Do I need a new number for an AI receptionist?

No. If you already use the WhatsApp Business app, Luna connects to that number through Meta's official flow and answers on it. Your clients keep the same chat. If you would rather keep your current number separate, we can set up a new business number instead and help you put it on your website, Instagram and Google profile.

Will I lose my WhatsApp chats?

No. Your chats stay on your phone whether or not you connect, and we never receive them. Meta's connection screen offers to share old chats with the software you connect; say no. Luna starts from the day you connect and only sees messages from then on.

Can I still reply from my own phone?

Yes. You keep using the WhatsApp Business app as normal and see every message, including Luna's replies. When you reply in a chat yourself, Luna steps back in that chat. Messages you send from the app stay free. Meta's charges apply only to the messages Luna sends.

Does it work with normal personal WhatsApp?

Not directly. Luna connects to the WhatsApp Business app, not WhatsApp Messenger. The fix is a free move: install WhatsApp Business, keep the same number, and let it bring your chat history across. WhatsApp supports this on the same number. Once you are in the Business app, you connect like everyone else.

Will WhatsApp ban my number for this?

Not for connecting this way. This is Meta's own route for letting software answer a WhatsApp Business app number, built into the app with its own Connect button and a Disconnect button to undo it. Most of the bans you hear about come from unofficial tools that pretend to be WhatsApp Web. Meta's normal messaging rules still apply whichever route you use, and Luna answers your clients about your business, which is what the official route is for.
